Founded in 1983 by Frederick R. "Rick" Rinehart, Roberts Rinehart offers two distinct publishing programs--one that focuses on the history, literature, culture, and politics of Ireland and another that publishes books on the American West, natural history, and the national parks. In addition to these activities, Roberts Rinehart has formed over 50 joint venture partnerships with such institutions as the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Ireland, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center to create books from their vast resources. Roberts Rinehart was acquired by the Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group in 2001.

Roberts Rinehart also publishes under its imprint, Court Wayne Press.
